PRRI Executive Director, Dr. Cheryl Lazaga Eusala, recently visited the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) for a courtesy meeting with President Dr. Francisco Gil Garcia and Vice President for Research Development and Extension (VPRDE) Dr. Debbie Marie Versoza. The focus of the discussion was on strengthening their partnership, particularly regarding the Rubber Testing Laboratory. Key topics included the need for certified lab analyses for semi-processed rubber products, the utilization of USM’s budwood garden for breeding and research, potential collaborations for peer-reviewed publications, and the establishment of a PRRI sub-office at USM to enhance research and development efforts in the rubber industry.
A field visit is scheduled for November 4 to finalize the partnership agreement, during which President Garcia offered facilities for PRRIโ€™s use. An ocular inspection of these facilities was conducted with VPRDE.
Additionally, a visit to SOXAARRDEC highlighted collaborative opportunities for future initiatives. This partnership aims to enhance the rubber industry and strengthen research capabilities, fostering a strong โ€œugnayanโ€ between institutions towards a GOMAgaang Buhay!

PRRI with DA-DRRM Conducts Field Monitoring and Surveillance in Basilan
October 22-24, 2024 || The Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI) led by Dr. Jill Villanueva, the PRRI-DRRM Focal Person assisted the Department of Agricultureโ€™s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Section (DA-DRRM) team as they conducted field validation and monitoring of activities funded under Quick Response Fund (QRF) for areas affected by PLFD across the Province of Basilan, BARMM. The joint team visited rubber farmers in Lamitan and Isabela City and also municipalities including Albarka, Akbar, Lantawan, Ungkaya Pukan, Sumisip, and Tipo-Tipo. During the visits, they conducted one-on-one interviews with farmers who had benefited from QRF support and performed thorough site evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the intervention.
Farmers expressed their gratitude for the assistance extended by the Department of Agriculture through PRRI. This proactive approach by PRRI and DA-DRRM only aims to ensure the security of their livelihoods and the health of rubber plantations against emerging threats such as PLFD – tungo sa GOMA-gaang Buhay!
